Quick Tips About Units 1-3

THERE ARE MANY MORE CONCEPTS TO KNOW ABOUT IN EACH UNIT. THE FOLLOWING TIPS AND EXAMPLES ARE SIMPLY REMINDERS ABOUT TOPICS COVERED IN THAT UNIT.  STUDY MORE THAN THIS.

Unit 1-Probability

·         Tree diagrams-count end branches

·         Counting principle-multiply all outcomes

·         And-mult

·         Or-add

·         Both-mult

·         Sample space-# of outcomes

·         Theoretical probability=    favorable

        Total possible

·         Complement-not

Unit 2-Exponents/scientific notation

·         MLB-add

·         DLB-subt

·         Neg-reverse the location, change the sign

·          Power to power-mult (34)7 = 28  so 328     (22m3 y4 )2  = 24m6y8  now 2x2x2x2 = 16m6y8·          Zero exponents = 1·          Scientific notation-number greater than 1 but less than 10 X 10 (exponent---negative or positive)·          When there are two scientific numbers <>1.

 if mult.  (2 x 102) x (9 x 108)= multiply the coeffs.      2x9 = 18 add exp bc of mlb 102 x 108 =1010 2.

if divid  (18x 102) ÷ (3 x 108)= divide the coeffs.  18÷3=6   subt exp bc of dlb 102÷  108 =10-6

Unit 3-Equations and inequalities

·         Remember, your goal is to isolate the variable.  Get the bomb on the side alone.  Move EVERYTHING AROUND THE BOMB FIRST(VARIABLE TERM YOU ARE LOOKING FOR) WITH INVERSE OPERATION.  THEN MOVE WHATEVER IS ATTACHED TO YOUR BOMB THROUGH INVERSE OPERATION.

·         Solve inequalities the same way.  Remember to flip the sign if you divide or mult by a negative.

Flip the inequality!!!!

Ex.  -3 – 2x > 9

      +3           +3

        -2x > 12

         -2      -2

x < -6                                          Graph the solution on the line at -6. Shade to the left.

Determine whether the circle at the point is open or closed.

Shade the direction of the inequality's arrow in your answer/solution.

Look at your sign to determine circle:                                                                                                                                < or > OPEN CIRLCE                <  or > CLOSED CIRCLE

·         Be sure to study this:  When solving for an equation with a lot of variables but they want you to solve for one:  for example:

****Follow the first rule above also.

 Example:   3x – fp = m + 7        Solve for p.

Move 3x first; it’s on the same side as p. Not f yet bc it’s attached to p.

  3x – fp = m + 7-3x                     -3x    Since it doesn’t have like terms on the right w/ x, it will not combine…     –fp = m + 7 – 3x  Now the inverse of multiplication is division. so –f times p, is divide -f on                                                                                                              -f         -f   -f     -f                                                  all terms on both sides. So p =- m - 7 + 3x                     f
